Point Webster students, all wearing green tees, pose at the qualifier event in Revere.

On Saturday, our grade 6-8 Robotics Team participated in the First Lego League Regional Qualifier at the Revere High School Field House. The qualifier hosted 40 teams from Massachusetts, including nine teams from Quincy. Only the top 12 teams move onto the next level of competition which is the Massachusetts East Championship FIRST LEGO League Tournament.

Point Webster brought 2 teams: the NaviGOATS and Bubbles to the competition. They competed throughout the day and their final scores were based on their best performance at the Robot Games, Robot Performance, Core Values (team work) and Innovation Project.

After five rounds of Robot Games, the NaviGOATS were in 13th place with a high score of 210 points and Bubbles was in 21st place with a high score of 160 points. All teams then advanced to the Lightning Round to determine the top teams.

At the end of the day, an Awards Ceremony took place with prizes for the top 3 teams in each category. At the ceremony, our Bubbles team was awarded 3rd place in Core Values. Also, Ms. Chin, our grades 6-8 facilitator, was awarded the Coach/Mentor Award. However, the biggest surprise was that both the NaviGOATS and Bubbles teams received the “Golden Ticket” to the Massachusetts East Championship FIRST LEGO League Tournament. (They are the only Quincy teams heading to this qualifying competition!)

Special thank you to the families who were able to stop by to watch the teams perform. This week will consist of another week of daily after school practices. The Massachusetts East Championships, which consists of 48 teams, will be held on Saturday, December 16th at Newton North High School.
